I am a teacher and mother to three Primary school aged children. I understand the far-reaching implications of the current vague legal school starting age requirements from the perspectives of an educator, parent and community member.
I have been asked to clarify ‘school readiness’ innumerous times over the years and am called upon to help parents assess whether their child is ready to start school. I know this to be a tremendous source of anxiety for many parents as they realise this decision has life-long academic, social and emotional implications.
My own children are not immune to this current climate and as a fellow parent, I understand the pressures we all face.
I created this handbook to address the concerns parents invariably have and because there isn’t a similar resource currently available.
It is a concise, no-nonsense, explicit and practical guide to help you as parents understand what is meant in NSW by the term ’school readiness’, how you can assess whether your child meets this expectation as well as practical suggestions on how you can help your child to develop these skills.
It is my aim that this handbook gives you and your family the guidance you’re looking for.
When deciding when is best for a child to start school, many people only regard the month the child was born.
In reality, there is much more to consider when making this important decision.

Use the 7-Step School Readiness System to determine your child's school readiness.
Learn ways you can support your child's development.

ADDRESSING THE CONFUSION & STRESS
You are here because the current vague NSW School start age causes you confusion
and conflicting, freeweilding opinions of others, although well-intended,
are just adding to the stress.
You want the best for your child, but surely you know there's more to consider
about school readiness than the month a child was born?
Up-to-date research, correlation with NSW Department of Education
and guided by an education expert, your new understanding of terms, curriculum,
age-appropriate expectations and school procedures will alleviate your confusion.
This simple 7-Step School Readiness System will give you the reassurrance you're seeking
